Job Summary: Salt Lake Community College aims to set an example for education that embraces and uplifts all students. As such, we are looking to employ a dynamic instructor skilled in understanding and effectively teaching students from a wide variety of cultural and academic backgrounds, and who excels in the art of teaching, exploring, applying, and synthesizing knowledge. In particular, the Biology Department is searching for an individual capable of delivering a welcoming, captivating, and intellectually challenging learning experience to our pre-major biology and pre-health science students. The successful candidate will join a vital and innovative department as its members are reflective practitioners and knowledgeable teachers in their respective fields. Such faculty members actively serve students in obtaining the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in their careers.The purpose of this adjunct lab instructor position is to prepare and teach college-level lab courses in Anatomy (BIOL 2325). The instructor may be assigned to any SLCC location and may be assigned alternative work schedules (e.g. evenings) depending on applicants availability. Instructors may also be asked to teach additional courses (e.g. College Biology I Lab - BIOL 1615) depending on applicants qualifications and availability. All instructors are expected to teach classes in accordance with established guidelines (e.g. Faculty Handbook) and policies (e.g. Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility and Tenure Policy - Ref#C4S01.01). Prior to teaching a lab section for a particular course at SLCC for the first time, instructors are required to observe and follow an experienced instructors lab session.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Advances the Colleges mission and values through effective, engaging teaching methods that support students from various backgrounds.
  2. Maintains professional behavior and collaborates with colleagues for instructional improvement.
  3. Teaches assigned courses according to department procedures, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description at the scheduled time and place and meets during required contact hours.
  4. Uses appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  5. Creates a supportive learning environment that fosters belonging and intellectual curiosity.
  6. Ensures safety in the lab and demonstrates respect and care for donated bodies used in instruction.
  7. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment. Prepares and submits incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  8. Provides each student with a syllabus (online) at the first class meeting that complies with department procedure and the CCO.
  9. Provides appropriate feedback on and returns all assignments in a timely fashion per department standards. This includes informing students of progress to date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
  10. Promotes the development of critical thinking among students.
  11. Maintains student attendance records and grades, and enforces FERPA guidelines.
  12. Provides ADA accommodations as requested.
  13. Responds promptly to voicemail and email communication using official SLCC channels (generally within 1-2 contract days).
  14. Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
  15. Maintains necessary educational credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  16. Solicits feedback and implements suggestions from students and peers when appropriate.
  17. Expands knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis.
  18. Completes required training and participates in professional development as appropriate.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued:

Minimum Qualifications: BS in Biology or a closely related field with a B+ or better in Human Anatomy and Human Anatomy Lab.

Experience as an aide or assistant with a cadaver lab.

Preferred Qualifications: B+ or better in an advanced Human Anatomy course or Cadaver dissection course. Prior experience teaching college-level Anatomy labs

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent content knowledge and teaching ability in Biology LabsAbility to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the CollegeDemonstrated skills and record of success to maintain good working relationships and collegiality with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.Demonstrated knowledge of Universal Design Principles for learning.Demonstrated knowledge and skills in technology and innovation as it relates to academia.Must be dependable and able to respond to student, department and college communications using SLCC official channels within 24-48 hours.Excellent written and oral communication skills.
